Goring edges closer to West PH Sea, threatens Batanes, Babuyan Island

Super Typhoon Goring, after passing through the Balintang Channel, is now approaching the northern part of the West Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau said.

As of 8:00 a.m. on August 30, the eye center of Goring was pinpointed 90 kilometers west southwest of Basco, Batanes, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The typhoon is moving west northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour, possessing maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h and gustiness reaching up to 240 km/h.

Areas in the path of the storm are warned of heavy rainfall, with the southern section of Batanes and the northwestern parts of Babuyan Islands expecting over 200 millimeters today.

Forecast accumulated rainfall ranges from 100-200 mm for locations like Ilocos Norte, the northern portion of Apayao, the extreme northwestern segment of mainland Cagayan, and remaining parts of Batanes and Babuyan Islands.

Places like Ilocos Sur, Abra, the northwestern part of mainland Cagayan, and the rest of Apayao are set to receive 50-100 mm.

Regions with elevation or in mountainous areas are at a higher risk for excessive rainfall, leading to potential flooding and landslides.

The enhanced southwest monsoon will also bring periodic or monsoon rains to western parts of Luzon and Visayas over the coming three days.

Below are areas under various wind signals:

  • Wind Signal No. 4: Batanes and parts of the northern and western Babuyan Islands.
  • Wind Signal No. 3: The rest of Babuyan Islands, northern Ilocos Norte, and the extreme northwest section of mainland Cagayan.
  • Wind Signal No. 2: The rest of Ilocos Norte, and the extreme northern portion of Ilocos Sur.
  • Wind Signal No. 1: Northern and central Cagayan, Apayao, northern Kalinga, northern Abra, and the far northern part of Ilocos Sur.

Regions not under any wind signal, especially coastal and upland/mountainous areas, will experience gusty conditions due to the enhanced southwest monsoon.

Affected areas today include Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, and more. The same conditions are expected tomorrow and on Friday for a similar list of areas.

Coastal areas, especially Batanes and the northern and western sections of Babuyan Islands, are warned of a moderate to high risk of storm surges leading to flooding.

A gale warning affecting most seaboards of Luzon, Visayas, and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao is also in place, leading to anticipated disruptions in maritime activities such as the suspension of sea travel.

Goring is predicted to traverse the Luzon Strait today and will likely exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tonight or tomorrow morning.

As the super typhoon approaches Guangdong, China, during the weekend, it may either make landfall or move nearly parallel to the coast.

A weakening trend is expected, and by Monday, Goring will have downgraded to a severe tropical storm.
