Super Typhoon Goring stays strong, poses hazardous conditions for Luzon

Super Typhoon Goring remains steadfast in strength as it moves south southwestward, according to the 11 a.m. bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

As of the latest data, the eye center of Goring is located 95 kilometers east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora, moving at 10 kilometers per hour. The super typhoon boasts maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h with gustiness reaching up to 230 km/h.

Goring is drenching parts of Luzon with heavy rainfall, with the extreme eastern portion of Isabela expecting accumulations greater than 200 millimeters. Similarly, the eastern sections of mainland Cagayan and Isabela are bracing for rainfall between 100-200 mm.

Over the next couple of days, areas such as Batanes and the eastern portion of the Babuyan Islands are also predicted to receive significant rainfall, heightening concerns for flooding and potential landslides.

Regions including Ilocos, Apayao, Abra, Benguet, the northern segment of Aurora, and the eastern area of Nueva Vizcaya should also anticipate rainfall of 50-100 mm.

Pagasa warns of possible landslides, especially in areas that are highly susceptible, as identified in local hazard maps.

In addition, the southwest monsoon, intensified by Goring, will trigger occasional or monsoon rains across western sections of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas over the next 72 hours.

Severe wind conditions are imminent, with storm-force winds forecasted in areas under Wind Signal No. 3. Gale-force winds are expected in regions under Wind Signal No. 2, and strong winds in those areas under Wind Signal No. 1.

The enhanced monsoon will also lead to gusty conditions in regions not under any wind signals, especially coastal and upland zones, which include Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and the Visayas.

Mariners should exercise caution as a gale warning has been issued for the northern and eastern coastal waters of Luzon, with potential disruptions to civilian maritime activities.

Pagasa predicts that Goring will loop over the Philippine Sea near Cagayan-Isabela today, August 27. It will then redirect northeastward and northward tomorrow before moving northwestward by Tuesday. By Wednesday evening or early Thursday, it’s anticipated to make landfall over southern Taiwan, weakening due to the island’s rugged terrain.

Affected areas include parts of Luzon, specifically in Isabela and Cagayan, with the Visayas and Mindanao remaining unaffected at this time.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for the incoming severe weather conditions.
