Goring intensifies; heavy rains, wind, and coastal warnings issued

Tropical Storm Goring has intensified and is expected to further strengthen, possibly reaching typhoon status by tomorrow, with the potential of becoming a super typhoon, according to the 5 a.m. bulletin issued by the state weather bureau on Friday, August 25.

Currently, Goring’s center was located 220 kilometers east southeast of Basco, Batanes, moving slowly southwestward, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The storm packs maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 90 km/h.

Areas, including Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and parts of mainland Cagayan, are set to receive heavy rainfall of 50-100 mm today. Similarly, Babuyan Islands and eastern portions of Cagayan and Isabela will witness these accumulations tomorrow.

By Sunday, the northern part of Aurora and the eastern portions of Cagayan and Isabela will be affected. Elevated and mountainous regions may experience higher rainfalls.

Due to this, flooding and rain-induced landslides, especially in vulnerable areas, are possible.

Goring’s influence on the Southwest Monsoon is expected to enhance occasional rains over western portions of Central Luzon and Southern Luzon starting tomorrow, extending to the western part of Visayas by Sunday.

Wind Signal No.1 is raised over areas including Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and parts of Cagayan and Isabela, warning of potential minor impacts from strong winds.

Coastal and upland regions, particularly exposed to winds, may experience stronger gusts. Meanwhile, the enhanced Southwest Monsoon will lead to gusty conditions in areas including Aurora, Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Dinagat Islands, most of Mimaropa, and Visayas over the weekend.

Travelers and mariners should be cautious as a Coastal Gale Warning is active for Batanes, Babuyan, and the northern coast of mainland Cagayan. The strong winds associated with Goring make sea travel risky, especially for specific vessels, and disruptions in civilian maritime activities are anticipated.

Goring’s trajectory is forecasted to be south southwestward or southward off the coast of Northern Luzon until tomorrow afternoon.

It is expected to turn southeastward through Sunday afternoon before looping northward, steering northwest by Tuesday towards the Luzon Strait.
