Calapan City’s Mervin Guarte strikes gold in SEA Games

Mervin Guarte, hailing from Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro, has achieved a remarkable feat in his athletic journey. He recently emerged as the champion in his chosen discipline at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games held in Cambodia.

Guarte’s exceptional performance in the 100m obstacle course event earned him the coveted gold medal, with an impressive time of 24.279 seconds.

His victory is a testament to his unwavering dedication and relentless training for nearly six months leading up to the competition, ultimately bringing glory to the Philippines.

Previously known for his accomplishments as a decorated middle-distance runner in the SEA Games, Guarte has found a new passion and experienced resounding success in obstacle course racing.

Despite securing numerous silver medals in the 800m and 1500m events since the 2011 SEA Games in Jakarta, the talented athlete had long yearned for a gold medal in his track and field career.

With his transition to obstacle racing, Guarte has discovered a renewed sense of fulfillment and triumph. Embracing the challenges of this thrilling discipline, he gratefully acknowledges the unwavering support he has received from his teammates, coaching staff, and officials within the obstacle racing community.

In a significant victory back in 2019, Guarte emerged as the victor in the obstacle race men’s 5 km event held in Manila, further cementing his prowess in this exciting field.
