DICT rejects request to extend SIM registration deadline

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has turned down the request of public telecommunication entities to extend the deadline for SIM registration.

“At this point, there is no extension of SIM registration,” the DICT said in a statement, saying the the deadline will remain as scheduled on Wednesday, April 26.

The SIM Registration Act, or Republic Act 11934, requires all users of mobile phones to register their SIMs or eSIMs with their respective service providers. The law aims to promote responsible use of SIMs and to provide law enforcement agencies with the necessary tools to crack down on perpetrators who use SIMs for illegal activities.

The DICT reminded the public that failure to register their SIMs or eSIMs will result in their deactivation, barring them from receiving and sending calls and text messages and accessing mobile applications and digital wallets.

“The DICT reiterates that the SIM Registration Act places primacy on the fundamental rights of Filipinos and is replete with safeguards to ensure the confidentiality and security of user data,” it said.

It also emphasized its commitment to working with PTEs to ensure the safe and secure implementation of the law.

With the deadline for SIM registration fast approaching, the DICT urged all Filipinos to register and comply with the law to avoid any inconvenience and ensure the continued use of their SIM.
