5.8 quake hits Sarangani island

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Balut Island, in Sarangani, Davao Occidental at 6:21 p.m. on Friday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter was located at approximately 292 kilometers southeast of Balut Island and had a depth of focus of 151 kilometers.

There were no reported damage or injuries from the offshore quake.

The Phivolcs also expects aftershocks following the earthquake.

Earthquakes are common in the Philippines due to the country’s location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge.
