MANILA–-The Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) will release on Monday, May 30, 2011 special stamps commemorating the beatification of Pope John Paul II.
The 147,000 pieces papal stamps that will be out will have a P7.00 and P4.00 denominations, to include block of four stamps in the First Day Cover.
PhilPost information officer Alvin Fidelson said the first day of issue of the stamps of a particular person, places or event usually brings a special interest among stamp collectors.
The special stamps will feature Blessed John Paul II’s pastoral visits in the country wherein millions of his Filipino followers have gathered and cheerfully welcomed the beloved Pope.
Before an estimated 1.5 million pilgrims, Pope John Paul II was beatified in Rome last May 1, 2011. Since his death on April 2, 2005, thousands of people have been supporting the call for his beatification and sainthood.
His successor, Pope Benedict XVI referred to him as “the great Pope John Paul II” during his first address at the St. Peter’s Church. He also referred Pope John Paul II as “the Great” in his published written homily for the Mass of Repose.
Stamps enthusiasts and collectors may avail of the commemorative stamps at the Postage and Philatelic Department located at the historic Manila Central Post Office Building in Liwasang Bonifacio.
