5 provinces under storm alert

Public storm signal number 1 was hoisted over five provinces in Bicol and the Eastern Visayas regions as Tropical Storm Chedeng (Songda) moves slowly toward the west-northwest direction.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Chedeng was located 490 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar with maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services said.

The provinces of Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon in the Bicol Region and Samar in Eastern Visayas were placed under storm signal number 1, the lowest alert level where winds range between 30 to 60 kilometers per hour.

Residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas in the five provinces were warned against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Chedeng was moving slowly at 13 kph toward the west northwest direction and is forecast to be 390 km east-southeast of Virac, Catanduanes Wednesday morning.

The storm is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and will bring rains over Visayas and Mindanao.
