MANILA–Global sports events, elections and celebrities were this year’s top interests of online Filipinos.
In the 2010 Year in Review of Yahoo!, the National Basketball Association ranked number one in the top searches on Yahoo! Philippines.
“The Filipino netizens prove to remain enthusiastic about sports throughout the year of 2010 as it tops searches in Yahoo! Philippines,” said Peter Joblin of Yahoo! Southeast Asia.
It was followed by the May national elections results, which included Benigno Aquino’s inauguration in June as the 15th president of the republic.
“Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao’s feat as the first boxer in the world to hold eight title championships in different weight divisions also received top hits illustrating how Filipinos continue to be proud of the continuous triumphs that their fellow countrymen are reaching as they become more visible in the global setting,” said Joblin.
Except for the nursing exam results which placed number 8, the remainder of the 10 overall top searches on Yahoo! was all about celebrities.
Anne Curtis came 4th, with her wardrobe malfunction as the most searched celebrity-related topic. Curtis was doing a dance number in Boracay for the summer special of ASAP XV in March when her swimsuit accidentally slipped, baring her right breast.
Next were celebrity couple John Lloyd Cruz and Shaina Magdayao, who in September figured in an ugly controversy. They were supposedly rushed to a hospital suffering from “penis captivus,” an allegation they dismissed as “a hoax” and the product of “sick minds.”
In the sixth rank was TV host-actress Kris Aquino, who dodged the limelight during the presidential campaign of her brother Benigno. She finally broke her silence in June and announced before ABS-CBN celebrity talk show The Buzz that her five-year marriage with basketball superstar James Yap was “over.”
Next was Willie Revillame, who has an ongoing court battle with his former showbiz bosses at ABS-CBN over his new game show on TV5.
GMA-7 star Marian Rivera was ninth and in the 10th place was TV host Mariel Rodriguez, who exchanged “I do’s” with action star Robin Padilla in a traditional Ibaloi ceremony in Baguio City in September.
Joblin said that while the list was “dominated by celebrities” it also “reveals the people’s hope for change and longing for honor and success.”
