Six coast guards face discharge for rape

Six coast guard members face possible discharge from the service after they were accused of raping a teenager inside their station in Taguig City, officials said Wednesday.

Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo, Coast Guard commandant, said he ordered the discharge from the service of the six coast guards, saying their actions will not be tolerated.

“We cannot tolerate this kind of act, most especially (since) the incident happened in our own station,” Tamayo told reporters in a chance interview in Camp Aguinaldo.

He added that they are coordinating closely with Taguig City police now investigating the rape complaint against the six coast guard personnel.

“We will not tolerate lapses in discipline and criminal acts that were committed by our own personnel and this is the very reason why we are encouraging the victim to file a case,” Tamayo said.

The victim, a resident of Bicutan, told police that sometime last week, the six coast guards detailed at the coast guard station in Lower Bicutan, Taguig City asked her for a drink while they were having a party.

The victim said that when she got drunk, the six took turns raping her inside the coastguard station. (Anthony Vargas)
