The jobless Mindoreño who was mauled by a jealous man in the US Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands died, a news report said Friday.
And Shane Jonathan Hocog, the 22-year-old suspect in the fatal assault on Larry Gonzales, was arrested by police in the village of Kagman in Saipan shortly before midnight Thursday, the Saipan Tribune said.
Gonzales, 37, was pronounced dead at the Commonwealth Health Center on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. due to severe head injury. He had been in coma since being taken to the health center Monday night.
A teenage girl told investigators that on Monday Hocog, her former boyfriend, arrived at a computer shop where she was doing her school project. Hocog asked her to go outside.
The teenager said they saw Gonzales, also her ex-boyfriend, at the parking lot. Hocog then told her to follow him as he walked toward Gonzales. She refused.
She said the two men were in a heated argument when Hocog suddenly punched Gonzales in the face, causing the victim to fall with his head hitting the concrete pavement. He lost consciousness. Hocog fled.
Gonzales, who worked as delivery man at a defunct water firm in Saipan, later regained consciousness after he got a first aid treatment from emergency medics. He had blood on his face and his left cheek was swollen.
But Gonzales, who could not remember what happened, refused to be brought to the hospital, saying he just wanted to stay inside his vehicle. The medics left.
Later, the computer shop’s owner found Gonzales slumped and unconscious inside his vehicle. He was rushed to the health center where he was declared brain dead the following day.
At 4:45 p.m. Thursday (Saipan time), Gonzales passed away.
Hocog is now in jail facing charges of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and battery, and assault and battery.
hopefully the suspect will stay in prison for the rest of his life. he took the life of a very good and humble person and whoever saw what really happened should come out and tell the story. it will be easier for the family and friends of the victim to accept. and you,you know what really happened, just show up and tell it to CNMI.
